Tigger Tor - a cold and icy fell run!
The dawned cold and frosty. My plan was to have a quick swim before heading off to outskirts of Sheffield for a fell race.
The swim was in some very warm water, just a short session, should have been 6 sets of 200m, but lost count on the last set and completed 240m, so 1,240m in total in 34' 57". 200 splits of 5.06, 5.02, 4.59, 4.57, 5.06, and 6.10 for the last 240m. According to the watch this was achieved with an average 26 strokes per length but still with an efficiency averaging 54.
I was home in time to have my porridge just as Andrey arrived for the journey north. Quickly loaded his car and we were of by 8.20am so plenty of time for the journey - surprised to see snow on the motorway through Leicestershire. Arrived at the Sheffield Tigers rugby club in time to park on the car park - a first. Quick registration before the long queues formed. I even had time to buy a new bum bag, I seem to have lost my decent one, so a new OMM one was on offer. A big discussion about what to wear, it was cold, it would be colder as we got onto the fells but the sun was out and the wind was light. The running tights won the the legs and a thermal top with the club vest on top.
The run itself was hard going, the ground was frozen, the fell shoes were not digging into the ground, the water was frozen with lots of ice and on the tops snow was still in the deeper troughs and some banks on Burbage Rocks. There were 6 of us from WRR, including Mike Aldridge for his first fell race, he even had to buy some shoes at the start. Craig is the really strong fell runner with others following behind, some a long way behind.
In the end Craig was 3rd male, followed by Mark, Phil, me and then Andrey. Mike A decided he wasn't into fell racing and after slipping and falling he was seen walking back to the start, an early shower and a pint, as well as putting his newly acquired fell shoes up for sale!
I was quite pleased with my time, 1.40.47, 35 seconds slower than last year, but obviously consistent in my form, although the conditions this year may have been harder as they were cold and icy. A total, according to the Garmin of 8.94 miles, further than last year with a new final checkpoint with 1,747 feet of height gain.
Another week's training is about to start, but also looking forward to next Sunday and another fell race, this time Charnwood, a lot nearer and not quite so demanding even through it is 14 miles, it is a lot less fell and more trail and fields, golf courses included.
