Saturday and Sunday - it's all included bike, swim and run
A 2 day blog as I forgot to write one for yesterday.
Saturday saw an exciting bike ride.
It was a cold and frosty morning with a clear blue sky, even had to put the dark lens back into the sunglasses, keeping the sun out today and not all the bits of muck that is more normal at this time of year. I got up later, didn't try for a club ride (I do not think anyone else did) and set off about 10am. I was following one of Steve's rides with some warm up and then straight into some over geared riding on short hill sections with a low cadence getting the heart rate into Zone 3 and then periods of recovery back to Zone 1 with what is now a normal cadence. The plan started to go wrong quickly. First problem was the roads, I had to watch out for icy patches so had to keep to bigger roads. I headed out towards Whittlebury and once I was on the Stoke Bruene Road I even had to get off and push up the main hill out of Blisworth as it was a sheet of water ice - thoughts about turning back but decided to give it one more go before giving up. I had been looking forward to getting out on the bike and off the turbo I have been using for a few weeks so I was just pleased to be out. The second problem is that all the hills are in the wrong place for the plan so ended up riding variable lengths of section so the uphill, as it arrived, was the over geared section and then the flat and downhill was the normal geared section. It found this a good session but one that I have no record of as the Garmin didn't work to plan - I think I must have told it to stop almost as soon as I started but I didn't realise as I was still getting the data I needed to manage the ride - isn't technology wonderful. The old faithful Cateye told me I had been out for 2hours and 6 minutes riding 30.74 miles - I know the rides are going to get longer as the training builds, so something to look forward to.
Sunday saw a swim and run.
It was the earliest I have been to Esporta on a Sunday, I was in the pool by 5 past 7, 7am that is. After warm up and some drills with the fins and swimming with one arm I moved onto the main set of 3 times 320m pacing sessions and then cool down. A quick 50 minutes session covering 1,560m. It was also the first real test of my Swimovate watch, a pedometer for the pool, it seemed to work well, sensing each lap, strokes and time for each set and overall and I didn't lose count, a major benefit.
Then off to the WRR Sunday run - local run today starting from Shelfley's and heading out over Collingtree and Blisworth then back via the canal. Another cold and bright day with icy roads and pavements. A large group today all busy talking their holiday, exciting days in the mountains, about the start of their training plans for their spring marathons and of course the Ironman in Austria. It seems that all the Ironman Austria team have now started, even if it is the first few days. We were all anxiously looking forward to the next 7 months of training - if you say it slowly it doesn't seem to bad.
Running with a large group always leads to a leisurely run with lots of stops and regroups, especially when it comes to getting across stiles, and more so with Nat's dog running with us.
A good start to the year, if all weekend's work out like this then the training should go well!!!
